Only two music festivals I’ve attended I have seen female headliners performing; Coachella 2018 and Snowglobe 2017. Coachella had Beyonce, who was their third female headliner in history, and first black female performer. Snowglobe had their first female headliner, Allison Wonderland for their new years eve performance. These two women created some of the most amazing shows I’ve ever seen.
Beyonce’s performance at Coachella was one of the most talked about performances ever on social media. Her performance was so legendary, the hashtag #beychella was created in her honor, gaining more popularity than #coachella that weekend. She made that festival hers. Beyonce explained on stage that she had to cancel headlining (in 2017) due to her going into labor, so she worked extra hard to make this performance up to her fans.
Allison Wonderland performed at the 2017 new years eve slot. Her performance has some of the craziest visuals and stage presence I’ve seen from a DJ. Although her set wasn’t as glamorous and produced as Beyonce, she definitely did a good job entertaining the crowd. She constantly was dancing and bouncing her head and talking to the crowd. Her visuals throughout her performance were unforgettable as well, during the last minute of 2017, she played a video reel of all the popular videos and events that had happened that year, and it was such an experience to be able to reflect on the year like that, even when at a festival.
These two women have put on some of the best performances I’ve seen live and I’d like to be able to see more women in this position. I find it extremely frustrating that Coachella is as old as it is and they are only on their third female headliner and first woman of color headliner, and this year they are hosting all three headliners that are men. I do believe that men and women have the ability to put on amazing performances, but this industry has so many great female artists that need to be recognized at events like this.
